George Russell suffered a dramatic exit from the Canadian Grand Prix, retiring from the lead on Lap 30. Russell straightlined Turn 9 in a smoking Mercedes, parking his car and fuming on the spot. His departure handed teammate Kimi Antonelli a comfortable lead and a major boost in the title race.
The Mercedes pair had been locked in an aggressive battle for the lead, even making glancing contact on Lap 24 as Antonelli briefly passed off-track before ceding the position. Max Verstappen inherited second under the subsequent VSC, with Lewis Hamilton third. Further back, McLaren's race was derailed early. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri started on intermediate tires as rain never materialized, forcing early stops. Piastri later clattered into Alex Albon, taking the Williams out and earning a 10-second penalty. If Antonelli wins, he will open a 43-point championship lead over Russell.
