Mercedes was so convinced Andrea Kimi Antonelli had an unfair advantage in his 2022 Formula 4 campaign that they pulled his engine mid-season and dropped in a different one. He kept winning.

James Vowles, then at Mercedes, told F1's official channel that Antonelli's two-and-a-half-tenth gap over the field "doesn't happen in Formula 4." The team suspected either the chassis or engine was giving him an edge. The engine swap settled it: the kid was just that fast, and he'd done it on six days of testing.

Thirteen wins in 22 F4 races, then a FREC title, then the aggressive jump to F2 and F1. Year one was rough. Year two has been a statement — Antonelli leads George Russell by 84 points with seven rounds left, carved through the field at Monza without a mistake, and now looks every bit the generational talent Mercedes bet he was.
