Christian Horner believes Kimi Antonelli has earned number-one status at Mercedes after a dominant 2026 campaign. The 20-year-old Italian holds a 102-point lead over George Russell with six races left and can clinch the title in Austin. Fourteen podiums, eight wins, second season in F1 — the math is simple.

Horner, drawing on Red Bull's Vettel and Verstappen eras, says teams must pick a lead horse when championships are on the line. "You earn the respect and status within a team by what you do on track," he told Autosport. Equal treatment sounds fair until you're splitting points while a rival runs away with it. He points to Williams in 1986, when Mansell and Piquet split votes and handed Prost the crown.

Mercedes entered the year expecting Russell to lead. Antonelli flipped the script. If another constructor closes the gap in 2027, the Silver Arrows will know who to back — and Antonelli's already made the case on track.
