David Coulthard says F1's return to Africa could be announced any day now. Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, the former Red Bull driver dropped the hint while discussing how crowded the 2027 calendar already looks with Portugal and Turkey confirmed—24 races doesn't leave much room, but Africa is apparently squeezing in.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali told media in August that "negotiations are progressing very well," the strongest signal yet that the championship will end a 33-year absence from the continent. The last African grand prix ran at Kyalami in 1993. Lewis Hamilton has spent the better part of seven years lobbying stakeholders behind the scenes, calling the gap inexcusable given that every other continent hosts a race. Hamilton, who is half African, said ahead of the 2026 season opener that he won't retire until F1 gets it done.
If Coulthard's intel is right, that clock just got a lot less urgent.
