Mercedes has secured an FIA hearing to challenge George Russell’s Monaco Grand Prix penalties, set for this Saturday ahead of the Austrian GP. This decision follows Alpine’s successful appeal to overturn Pierre Gasly's pitlane speeding penalties, after F1 Management admitted Monaco’s pitlane timing system was incorrectly configured. Russell initially incurred a five-second penalty for pitlane speeding, then received an additional drive-through for serving it incorrectly. This sequence dropped him out of the points, a costly no-score. Mercedes now aims to convert the drive-through into a 20-second time penalty if the original speeding infraction is deemed invalid. This regulatory maneuver could potentially reinstate Russell into the points. McLaren and Red Bull are also contesting other aspects of the amended Monaco results, adding further controversy to an already chaotic weekend. The FIA's ruling will establish a critical precedent for F1's official timing reliability.
