F1 is heading back to Africa after a 37-year absence, signing a 10-year deal to race in Rwanda starting in the early 2030s. The Formula 1 African Grand Prix, presented by Visit Rwanda, will be held at a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, 40km south of Kigali near the new international airport. Alex Wurz's WurzDesign and Tilke Engineers are crafting an FIA Grade 1 layout that exploits Rwanda's natural elevation—the country's known as the Land of a Thousand Hills for a reason.
The continent already has 100 million F1 fans, with nearly 60 percent under 35, a demographic the sport craves. Hamilton's been lobbying for this for years, and both Verstappen and Russell are on board. Rwanda test-drove the relationship in 2024, hosting the FIA Awards where Verstappen collected his fourth title and McLaren their first constructors' crown in two decades.
No race date yet, but this is the circuit Liberty Media hopes will cement F1's global footprint for the next generation.
