Formula 1 drivers are calling the tyre degradation at Barcelona a "nightmare," setting up a predicted "deg fest" for Sunday's Grand Prix. Soaring track temperatures, hitting 52°C, combined with Pirelli's higher tyre pressures for the 2026-spec cars, are creating unprecedented thermal decay.

Haas driver Ollie Bearman articulated the struggles, describing the tyres as "huge balloons" with "so much air" that cause "huge" overheating and make a second flying lap pointless. Pirelli initially raised minimum starting pressures but adjusted them down for Saturday after Friday's analysis showed tyres exceeding target running pressures.

The severe degradation means qualifying will be a "one-shot" affair, as tyres struggle to cool sufficiently for a second attempt. For the race, all three compounds show similar high degradation, offering no clear preferred choice. This opens the door for flexible two- or even three-stop strategies, with the undercut expected to be a potent weapon. Teams will need masterful tyre management to navigate the demanding conditions on race day.
