Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff strongly backs Formula 1’s current engine balancing rules, known as ADUO, while dismissing Balance of Performance (BoP) as a "political mess." The Additional Development Upgrade Opportunity system aims to prevent any manufacturer from dominating, a lesson learned from Mercedes’ own reign in 2014-2016.
Under ADUO, the FIA recently granted Mercedes, Ferrari, and others extra development chances after assessing Red Bull's engine as the strongest. Wolff sees this as crucial for the sport, particularly for attracting newcomers like Audi. He argues that BoP has historically driven manufacturers out of other series. However, Audi CEO Mattia Binotto suggests ADUO could evolve, advocating for a system tied to championship standings, similar to aero development rules. Binotto believes this would create a more straightforward path to convergence across both chassis and power units, ensuring trailing manufacturers get more opportunities. The debate over how best to level the playing field will be key as new engine regulations loom.
