Williams is burning its 2026 season to fix decades of neglect. Team principal James Vowles confirmed the cost cap has forced Grove into an ugly trade-off: spend on infrastructure or spend on the current car. Williams chose the former.
The winter was a wake-up call. An overweight, late car exposed how far behind the facilities had fallen—years of underinvestment finally catching up. Now, with the cap squeezing every dollar, resources that would normally fund performance upgrades are going toward operational fixes instead.
The results speak for themselves. Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz finished 17th and 18th in Hungary, two laps down. Williams sits ninth in the constructors' standings with 11 points through the first half of the season.
Vowles insists the groundwork will pay off, but the timeline is measured in years, not months. For now, Williams is stuck writing off 2026 to be competitive in 2027 and beyond.
