McLaren has overhauled the fuel system components on Lando Norris' car after a persistent injection issue cost him straight-line speed in Baku and Malaysia. The problem — McLaren's responsibility, not Mercedes' — knocked Norris back two or three grid spots in each of the last two qualifying sessions, a brutal deficit in a championship battle this tight. The fuel glitch hit Oscar Piastri's car intermittently too. Norris confirmed Thursday the team made "a number of changes to auxiliary components" ahead of Singapore FP1, though he won't know if the fix holds until he's on track. Singapore's tight, slow layout masks power-unit weaknesses better than Baku's long straights, but McLaren can't afford to leave anything on the table with the top four running this close. The reigning champion acknowledged he can drive better too, but said it's "always tough when you come out of corners better and end up going slower." If the fuel system finally behaves, McLaren gets a clean read on whether Malaysia's rough-surface struggle was an outlier or a bigger aero problem.
