Mercedes' long-awaited upgrade package backfired in Malaysia, costing them three to five tenths instead of delivering the expected three-tenth gain. Antonelli qualified half a second off Verstappen's pole, Russell another two tenths back—the team's first time missing the top three by a meaningful margin this season.
Team principal Toto Wolff identified two immediate problems: excessive drag on the straights, especially relative to Verstappen, and stubborn understeer through low-speed corners like turn two. Sepang's abrasive surface complicated diagnosis, producing car behavior Mercedes hadn't seen all year. Wolff still believes the upgrade works but says something else is interfering, and the team needs answers before the next race.
The timing stings. Mercedes entered Malaysia as runaway constructors' leaders, and this was one of their few major development pushes. If they can't unlock the package quickly, their championship cushion won't hold.
