MERCEDES ON DUTCH GP TEAM ORDERS: WE WOULD’VE DONE THE EXACT SAME THING THE OTHER WAY AROUND

Mercedes reviewed its Dutch GP team order and stands by the call. George Russell was instructed to let Kimi Antonelli pass with seven laps remaining, securing second for Antonelli while Russell defended third from two charging Ferraris.

The logic was clean: Antonelli had taken a free stop under the VSC for fresh softs. If Russell had pitted too, he'd have dropped behind a Ferrari and lost the podium. Mercedes debated giving Russell the tow and Overtake Mode but scrapped it—only two tenths of gain, all on the straight where he'd be most vulnerable.

Russell questioned the call but delivered what trackside boss Andrew Shovlin called "a really impressive effort," holding both Ferraris at bay. The result moved Russell level with Lewis Hamilton on points, second in the championship on wins countback. Mercedes now has two drivers in genuine title contention and a team order precedent that cuts both ways.
