Rwanda's new circuit will be F1's most dramatic rollercoaster when it debuts in the 2030s. The Rise Motordrome at Bugesera packs 197 meters of elevation gain per lap — more than any track on the calendar — and one straight alone drops harder than Spa's Eau Rouge. Designer Alex Wurz and architect Carlsten Tilke built the layout around two natural hills flanking a lake, skipping the usual earth-moving project for something that feels organic. Nearly 15% gradient in spots.

The sweeping layout raised eyebrows about overtaking, but Wurz says he's logged thousands of simulator laps testing passing zones and strategy variation. He's consulted drivers holding a combined 12 world titles to stress-test the design.

The race will be called the African Grand Prix, not the Rwanda GP. That's intentional. President Paul Kagame wants the event to pull other African nations into the sport, not gatekeep the continent's F1 return. The name is the message.
