Sixty years ago today, Ludovico Scarfiotti became the last Italian to win his home grand prix at Monza driving a Ferrari. No Italian has matched the feat at the Italian GP since 1966. Riccardo Patrese won at Imola in 1990, but that race counted as the San Marino Grand Prix.
Here's where it gets messy for the purists: Mario Andretti won at Monza in 1978. Born in Italy but raised American after his family emigrated, Andretti raced under the US flag — meaning an American took the Italian GP twelve years after Scarfiotti. The fact that the region Andretti was born in now belongs to Croatia only deepens the confusion.
The same 1966 race saw Jack Brabham lock up his third and final championship driving his own car for his own team, the first constructor-driver title double in F1 history.
Ferrari's Monza drought is now six decades deep. Home wins don't come around often, even for the most storied teams.
