Racing Bulls faces a genuine dilemma for 2027: Liam Lawson has earned his seat, but Nikola Tsolov represents the future. With Arvid Lindblad locked in after a strong rookie campaign, team principal Alan Permane has "a couple of weeks" to decide who gets the second cockpit.
Lawson's case is straightforward. He's salvaged his Red Bull career after a disastrous 2025 cameo at the senior team, then deputized for injured Isack Hadjar earlier this year and looked sharp. He's fast, reliable, and has never completed a full season in one car — give him the continuity and he'll deliver.
Tsolov's case is strategic. The 19-year-old Bulgarian is tearing through F2 and represents the next wave of Red Bull juniors. Racing Bulls exists to develop talent for the mothership, not to plateau with capable journeymen. Permane admitted the decision hinges partly on "what they can do in the future," which tilts the scales toward youth.
If Red Bull truly believes Lindblad is their next star, pairing him with another rookie makes sense. If they want insurance, Lawson stays.
