The FIA is re-evaluating its ADUO engine performance rankings after Red Bull challenged the finding that their power unit is Formula 1's benchmark. The governing body's initial assessment, based on the first five races, declared Red Bull's internal combustion engine superior, making them ineligible for the development upgrades offered to lagging manufacturers. Surprisingly, Mercedes, despite winning every race this season, was deemed over 2% slower than Red Bull and therefore qualified for one upgrade and additional budget. Other manufacturers like Ferrari were further behind, eligible for maximum upgrades.
Red Bull's own data contradicts the FIA, showing their engine trailing Mercedes by about three tenths. The team’s concern is a valid one: if the ranking stands, they can't develop their ICE, potentially stifling their championship challenge. The FIA will now double-check its power sensor data. This review is critical as engine development opportunities could significantly shift the pecking order through the remainder of the season.
