George Russell threw away a commanding start in Singapore's sprint race, spinning into the pit wall on lap two after snatching the lead from Max Verstappen. The Mercedes driver called it "overly confident" driving, admitting he misjudged throttle application coming out of a corner and drifted wide onto the white line—the cardinal sin in wet conditions.
"I got more power than I was expecting from the battery," Russell said. "The number one rule in the rain is don't touch the white lines. Very, very silly mistake."
It's Russell's first crash of 2026, and the timing couldn't be worse. Mercedes scrambled to repair the car ahead of a delayed qualifying session, though the effort is largely academic—Russell faces a grid penalty for a power unit change that will drop him to the back of Sunday's grid regardless of where he qualifies.
