RUSSELL DEFENDS “FAIR” DECISION TO LET ANTONELLI INTO SECOND PLACE

George Russell handed second place to Andrea Kimi Antonelli at Zandvoort after Mercedes ordered a position swap, erasing the six-point gain Russell made in Saturday's sprint. Antonelli ran ahead before pitting under a late VSC; when he caught Russell on fresher rubber, the team invoked their standing rule: different strategies, no fighting, swap back.

Russell defended the call as fair team play. "He deserved to be P2," Russell said, noting Antonelli copied Ferrari's VSC gambit to protect Mercedes' result. Russell admitted he might have held position—he later defended brilliantly against Hamilton through another VSC—but the risk wasn't worth it. "Could I have kept him behind? Maybe. But equally it could have been a P5."

The pair ran opposite race arcs. Antonelli was strong on mediums, struggled on hards; Russell was the inverse. That dynamic, plus an early tangle behind Piastri, locked Russell into third. The championship swing keeps Antonelli's momentum rolling.
