Mercedes opened 2026 with back-to-back 1-2 finishes and rookie Kimi Antonelli reeling off five straight wins, but mechanical gremlins have torched what should've been a runaway championship. The damage: at least 61 points gone.
Russell's Canada heartbreak was the worst — battery failure on Lap 30 killed a near-certain win after he'd dominated the weekend and was battling wheel-to-wheel with his teenage teammate. That's 25 points vaporized. Antonelli lost 18 in Barcelona when an electrical shutdown struck with five laps left and P2 locked in, then another 18 at Silverstone when a wheel shield failure ended his charge on Leclerc and dropped him to P15.
Toto Wolff called the reliability "not good enough." Understatement. Ferrari and Red Bull are closing the gap in the constructors' race, and Mercedes can't afford another DNF if they want to turn speed into silverware.
