UKRAINE APPEALS TO FIA COURT OF APPEAL OVER LIFTING OF RUSSIA BAN

The Ukrainian Automobile Federation has taken the FIA to court over its decision to lift the ban on Russian drivers and flags in motorsport. The reversal, effective August 3rd but unannounced for ten days, undid a 2022 measure imposed after Russia's invasion. The war continues; the FIA offered no explanation.

Ukraine's appeal argues that Russia's motorsport federation operates offices in occupied Ukrainian territory—Sevastopol, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia. The Ukrainian federation's website lists members killed in the fighting.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem opposed the original sanctions and reportedly pushed for this shift, citing a similar move by the IOC in July. The ban had sidelined drivers like Nikita Mazepin, who raced for Haas until 2022 under his father's Uralkali sponsorship in Russian livery. F1's Russian Grand Prix remains canceled, and the FIA still prohibits events in Russia and Belarus.

The Court of Appeal will now decide whether geopolitics belongs in the paddock—or if it never left.
