Max Verstappen is ready to walk away from Formula 1 if planned rule changes for 2027 are blocked. The four-time champion had committed to Red Bull, in part, because he was optimistic about changes to make F1 cars more enjoyable, specifically moving to a 60/40 combustion/electrical energy balance. However, this hardware shift is now at risk due to a lack of support from some manufacturers, who prefer delaying it until 2028 citing costs or the impact on F1's ADUO catch-up mechanism.

While Red Bull and Mercedes back the 2027 update, other teams resist. Verstappen finds the prospect of another full year with the current car specifications "mentally not doable." He won't wait for 2028; if changes are delayed, he'd quit the sport entirely, saying there are "other fun things out there." Verstappen urges the FIA and FOM to be "strong" and push through the changes, believing it's "better for the sport as a whole." The ball is now in the FIA’s court to resolve this dispute and secure Verstappen's long-term commitment.
