Williams was staring at a nightmare scenario: losing both Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon after a brutal 2026 slide from fifth to ninth in the constructors' standings. Team principal James Vowles admitted he was "concerned about losing both" — two championship-caliber drivers watching their team regress to just 11 points through the season's first half. But both re-signed for 2027 anyway, a vote of confidence Vowles called a "weight lifted off the factory."
The retention wasn't charity. Vowles says Williams has shown both drivers what's changing behind the scenes, and they bought in. Sainz and Albon each visited Grove this week to rally the troops. "The drivers are not the limitation to us at the moment," Vowles said. "We are."
Now Williams has to prove the rebuild is real. Continuity buys time, but 2027 needs results — or this faith runs out.
