Williams went all-in on 2026 regulations, publicly shifting focus midway through last season. That bet failed. Team Principal James Vowles had to make the call no boss wants: warning Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon in December that the FW48 would be overweight and off the pace.
The drivers' response shocked him. Albon didn't wait for Vowles to finish before saying "I'm with you. What can I do to help?" Sainz asked questions, then echoed the same. Both flew to Grove immediately to rally a team that had been "punched in the stomach."
That leadership matters. Williams sits P9 with just 12 points, best finish P8. The Mercedes power unit couldn't save an overweight chassis that missed Barcelona shakedown entirely. But Sainz and Albon's buy-in during the August break signaled they're not bailing. Vowles called it leadership—self-interest disappearing for something bigger. For a team scraping bottom, that commitment might be the only thing keeping the rebuild alive.
