Cadillac fired Graeme Lowdon as team principal midway through its debut season, replacing him with Marcin Budkowski effective immediately. CEO Dan Towriss admits the move came sooner than planned — Lowdon learned of it the morning of the announcement — but insists waiting would have closed the window to influence the 2027 car.
The American outfit says it needs different leadership for its "new phase." Lowdon excelled at the build-up; Budkowski brings technical depth (Ferrari, McLaren pedigree) and a mandate to tap underutilized GM resources, especially artificial intelligence. Towriss points to internal communication issues and siloed departments as teething problems that need a more technical team principal to solve.
Budkowski hasn't toured the factory yet. The timing is jarring — mid-summer break, mid-season — but Towriss is betting that someone with a fresh perspective and eyes on GM's broader toolkit can unlock what the current setup couldn't. For a team that's exceeded expectations on track, the real work is still in Fishers.
