WHY MCLAREN MUST PASS ITS MONZA TEST BEFORE TALKING ABOUT AN F1 TITLE CHALLENGE

McLaren has strung together back-to-back wins at Budapest and Zandvoort, cutting Lando Norris' championship deficit to 83 points behind leader Kimi Antonelli. But team principal Andrea Stella isn't ready to call it a title fight yet — not until Monza proves the MCL40 can handle a completely different challenge.

The Hungaroring and Zandvoort are high-downforce circuits packed with medium-speed corners, exactly where McLaren shines. Monza is the opposite: long straights, chicanes, and energy management. The MCL40's weaknesses — drag, braking, and slow-speed corner performance — all get exposed at the temple of speed. And while McLaren has closed the gap on Mercedes' power unit understanding since receiving new simulation tools at Spa, Monza is where that homework gets graded.

Stella's logic is sound. Winning on your strongest circuits doesn't prove you can fight everywhere. If McLaren can run up front in Italy, the title math becomes real. If they can't, those 83 points stay a canyon.
