Mercedes' supposed upgrade turned into a downgrade at the worst possible time. The aero package that debuted in Malaysia was meant to deliver three tenths — instead it cost the team pace and shrank the car's setup window so badly that George Russell bolted the old spec back on just to generate comparison data. Red Bull won Malaysia and swept Singapore while Mercedes scrambled.
The fix in Singapore offered a pulse: diff tweaks mid-sprint, then raised ride height and a rearward aero shift before quali. Kimi Antonelli drove to third, and the final stint looked promising. But Toto Wolff admitted the upgrade still isn't delivering what the sim promised, and the narrower balance window means the car snaps between understeer and oversteer with little margin.
Singapore's all slow corners, though. Austin's mix of high- and low-speed will tell the real story — and whether Mercedes' four-year development curse is finally over or just getting started again.
