Williams has locked down Carlos Sainz with a multi-year extension despite a disastrous 2026 campaign that had the Spaniard eyeing the exits. Sainz bet on Williams ahead of this year's regulation reset, expecting the team to capitalize. Instead, the car showed up late, overweight, and nowhere near the pace needed to fight at the front. That fueled speculation he'd bolt for Audi or Aston Martin, both of whom were in his sights.
But Williams convinced him to stay. Sainz cites internal changes, fresh investment, and "transparent and honest" talks with team principal James Vowles about what went wrong and how to fix it. With Alex Albon also locked in through next season, Williams keeps its driver lineup intact while it regroups. A major upgrade package lands at Baku, but the real test is whether 2027 delivers on the promise Sainz is betting on. If it doesn't, those exit clauses will matter.
