Williams has aggressively boosted its technical leadership, announcing the recruitment of four senior figures from McLaren, Mercedes, and Alpine. Most notably, Piers Thynne, formerly McLaren’s Chief Operating Officer, will join as Williams’ Chief Optimisation and Planning Officer in August. Thynne was instrumental in McLaren's recent resurgence, and his new role involves modernizing Williams' facilities with cutting-edge tech like AI and robotics to "set a new benchmark in Formula 1."
The Grove-based outfit also secured Claire Simpson, Mercedes' aerodynamic group leader, as Head of Aerodynamic Development. Fred Judd, who led Mercedes' power unit engineering for customer teams, steps in as Head of Performance Optimisation. Rounding out the hires is Steve Booth, Alpine’s former chief engineer for the 2026 project, now Head of Vehicle Engineering. These four bring over 65 years of combined experience and worked on 12 championship-winning cars. This significant talent influx signals James Vowles' serious intent to elevate Williams back to competitive contention.
