The FIA and Liberty Media are pressing F1 manufacturers to finalize the 2027 engine regulations, targeting approval at the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix. This push comes after Ferrari and Audi raised objections to an earlier proposal for a 14% fuel flow increase, which would have shifted power significantly from electric to combustion components. The two manufacturers cited concerns over reliability, development costs, and losing benefits from their existing power unit designs.
Now, a compromise is gaining traction: a smaller 5% fuel flow increase paired with a substantial 40-50 point reduction in the 2027 cars' aerodynamic load. This combination aims to achieve a 60/40 combustion-to-electric power ratio and reduce "lift and coast" without demanding costly, last-minute architectural overhauls to the already advanced power unit designs. With the deadline looming, a swift resolution is critical to greenlight F1's future engine formula.
