MERCEDES EXPLAIN DECISION TO ABANDON ATTEMPT TO OVERTURN RUSSELL’S MONACO GP PENALTY

Mercedes officially withdrew its request to review George Russell's Monaco Grand Prix penalty, opting not to pursue the matter with the FIA. Russell received a five-second penalty, then a drive-through, for pit lane speeding, ultimately finishing outside the points. Mercedes stated its decision stemmed from the FIA and F1 management committing to address the "unique circumstances" and "factors" causing the Monaco controversies.

This move follows Alpine successfully overturning similar pit lane speeding penalties for Pierre Gasly, which stewards deemed based on an incorrect pit lane measurement. That inconsistency sparked outrage, with McLaren formally appealing the decision to rescind Gasly’s penalties. Mercedes' withdrawal suggests they believe the FIA's internal review will lead to necessary changes in stewarding and penalty application, hopefully bringing more clarity and consistent enforcement to future race weekends.
