Mercedes has explained the costly pit stop blunder that saw George Russell fail to serve a five-second penalty at the Monaco Grand Prix. Russell incurred the penalty for exceeding the pit lane speed limit by a mere 0.1 kph during his first stop. Mercedes admits they don't fully understand why, noting other teams faced similar issues, leading Alpine to request a Right of Review for Pierre Gasly's penalties.

The critical error happened under the Safety Car. Mercedes' initial plan was to pit Kimi Antonelli, who had just unlapped Russell. When the field was routed through the pit lane, Russell was called in, but the crucial message to "stay in the fast lane" didn't reach him. Seeing his tires, Russell mistakenly pulled into the box. Mechanics, unprepared for a penalty service, simply changed his tires. Russell repeatedly urged for another stop to serve the penalty, but the team declined. Mercedes will now be looking to ensure such communication breakdowns don't undermine future race strategies.
