Mercedes will get its say this Saturday regarding the controversial U-turn on pitlane speeding penalties from the Monaco Grand Prix. The Silver Arrows filed a "right of review" petition after Alpine successfully had Pierre Gasly’s penalties rescinded, reinstating his podium finish. Formula One Management admitted a measurement error led to the initial penalties for Gasly and others. McLaren and Red Bull have already appealed the decision to overturn.
George Russell also received pitlane speeding penalties in Monaco, and Mercedes wants clarity. Their petition requires demonstrating a "significant and relevant new element" previously unavailable to the stewards. Team boss Toto Wolff is realistic, calling it a "long shot," but insists Mercedes needs a seat at the table where such decisions are made. This Saturday's virtual conference will first determine if Mercedes clears the new evidence threshold. If so, a second part of the hearing will follow, with other concerned parties potentially joining. This procedural challenge highlights the ongoing confusion over pitlane infractions and their inconsistent application.
